The Inspiration
Jordy was born in 1986 in Piqua, Ohio with PURA syndrome, a rare genetic condition that fewer than 800 people in the world are known to have. When he was born, the doctors weren’t optimistic about what his future would look like. Thankfully, they were wrong.
His life has included seizures, surgeries, therapies, and more medical complexity and complications than most people will ever experience. But there’s so much more to Jordy than his diagnosis and doctor’s visits.
Over the last forty years, my parents have become the world’s experts on Jordy. They know the things no medical record could ever capture. Where to buy his favorite yogurt. What music calms him down. What gets him excited. That the sound of an ambulance will make him cry. Which routines make him feel safe. How he communicates. All the little things that make Jordy, Jordy.
A few years ago, my mom and I started talking about the future. “What will happen to Jordy when I’m no longer there?” was a question she agonized over regularly. She wasn’t worried about whether Jordy would continue to receive great medical care. She was worried about everything she knew that wasn’t written down. Everything she’d spent forty years learning about Jordy that might not get passed on to the next person caring for him.
Someone suggested we put it all in a shared spreadsheet. But a shared spreadsheet didn’t feel like the answer. We wanted a place where everything that makes your loved one who they are could live.
